In Between Days

Gemma Thorpe

Youth charity Centrepoint estimates that 1 in 100 young people experience homelessness each year in the United Kingdom, mostly caused by family breakdown. Services and help for these young people is severely underfunded and oversubscribed: the Roundabout hostel in Sheffield, where I began this project, has to turn away 15 young people a week looking for shelter due to a lack of bedspace.

The road to independence is long and complex; young people must navigate a maze of social services and support systems as they seek their own tenancy. I spent several months trying to look beyond the negative stereotypes of UK youth and show the quieter moments, the emotional reality of being on the margins of UK society.
