A Portrait of Recovery
In August 2012, I started volunteering for Sheffield Alcohol Support Services. The service provides support and a safe environment for people in the community to develop non-drinking lifestyles, bridging the gap between treatment and the outside world. My intent was to record the actions of those who are trying to reclaim their lives from drug and alcohol abuse. I can honestly say that they are some of the nicest and funniest people I have ever met, and it has been a privilege to have been able to work with them.
Drink is a major factor in 50% of all crime. It costs the NHS £2.7 billion a year. 1 in 8 of the adults who die before the age of 64, do so because they have abused alcohol.
These are the people who have turned their lives around.
Their lives may always be a constant battle.
